Abstract

Creating New Style of GEOINT Analytics-Fusing Geospatial Data Social Media
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Authors: Nathaniel Wolpert

The immersion of social media and crowd sourcing in crisis mapping since the Haiti Earthquake has changed how geospatial disaster response support is done. This presentation focuses on fusing typical layers of geospatial data that one would encounter working a disaster with social media information such as Twitter, or Ushahidi. The scenarios explore how comparing supply distribution points, rescue locations from search and rescue task forces, and security information with crowd sourced information can give better indications as to where supplies are needed the most, where people need to be rescued, or where to place needed security forces. The result is deepening and widening GEOINT analytic expertise. It is this type of analytics that take GEOINT to the next level of analysis and add new elements to disaster response.
