Abstract

Situation Awareness for the 2011 Queensland Flood and Storm Events
Track: Disaster Management and Emergency Response

After some of the most devastating natural disasters in history affecting Queensland, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) Air Operations and GIS Units utilise their in-house developed Aerial - Total Operational Mapping (A-TOM) platform to assess the impact.

A-TOM is a solution developed by the QFRS's GIS Unit in response to a business need of the Air Operations Unit to provide near real time fire intelligence gathering and sharing for use during an incident to support strategic and tactical decision making and has since been adapted for use in response to storm and flooding events.

Based on ESRI's ArcGIS Server Mobile technology it provides a simple, easy to use information gathering and mapping tool that works with or without network connectivity. Information collected by Air Observers located in aircraft are able to share the information in near real-time with incident control centres.
