Abstract
Web Mapping & Geoprocessing of Agricultural Indicators for Sub-Saharan Africa
Track: Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
Authors: Ryan Whitley
The International Food Policy Research Institute's HarvestChoice program and SpatialDev have developed Mappr - a web application that allows users to calculate agricultural statistics for custom areas in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Mapper serves several purposes:
- a graphical interface for the large body of data within the HarvestChoice program.
- a tool to help policy makers make more informed investment decisions.
- a gateway for agricultural data researchers to download raw HarvestChoice data for offline analysis
Mappr's geoprocessing services allow multiple ways for users to aggregate agricultural indicator data:
- a market analysis tool calculates travel time polygons based on road networks and then calculates totals for each area
- a custom area tool calculates totals for a user-definded (and drawn) polygons
- a domain tool creates custom areas and totals based on intersected mashups of user-selected and user-classified polygons
Mappr was built using the ESRI JavaScript API and ArcGIS Server.
