Geographical information systems (GIS) play a major role in sample and census surveys. Files created through GIS tools form the foundation of the process. There are many components to the census survey, namely the demarcation of the country into manageable Enumeration Areas (EA's), mapping of these EA's, fieldwork (consisting of publicity, listing, data collection, monitoring and evaluation {M&E}, and the post enumeration survey {PES}), data processing, analysis, and finally dissemination. This paper discusses the role of GIS in each of these components by considering preparation for the South African Census in 2011.
