Abstract
Connecting the Dots with Enterprise GIS For Telecommunications Companies
Track: Telecommunications and Location-Based Services
Authors: Danny Petrecca
The increase in demand for broadband has raised competition for telecoms and cable companies. Federal stimulus programs for broadband expansion (BIP/BTOP) require tangible results and fast design turn around. The growth of Smart Grid initiatives requires utilities to manage increasingly complex communications networks. All of these network operators are realizing that "traditional network inventory via spreadsheets/CAD drawings is not sustainable. You can't effectively manage tomorrow's networks with yesterday's technology.
This session will show how Telvent assisted three different organizations in using ArcGIS based systems to provide holistic views of their asset and network inventory. You will hear about implementations at cable operator RCN, BTOP grant recipient Maine Fiber Company and electric utility Truckee Donner PUD. Enterprise GIS gives these organizations a centralized, accurate, timely representation of their asset and network inventory while facilitating data sharing. Enterprise GIS also reduced operational expenses, improved reliability, increased efficiency and quickly restored network service.
