GIS as a tool for regulatory compliance and asset management has traditionally been limited to two-dimensional representation. However, there are situations where the additional data provided by a three-dimensional perspective is not only useful, but necessary to accurately comply with changing regulations and manage infrastructure more efficiently. The three-dimensional modeling capabilities of SketchUp combined with ArcGIS provide a way for Marine Forces Reserves command to comply with the National Defense Authorization Act by demonstrating a potential avenue for reaching the goal of obtaining 25% of its energy use from renewable resources by 2025 through the use of Critigen Solar Mapping applied to remote Solar Site Assessments (SSA). The command is able to use the SSA results to determine the most cost effective sites for Solar PV generation. The command is also able to demonstrate compliance with Department of Defense Minimum Antiterrorism Standards for Buildings, potentially saving significant time and resources.
