Abstract
Sustainable Forest Mosaics: Integrated biodiversity monitoring and forest restoration guidelines
Track: Conservation
Authors: Sabrina Silva
Sustainable Forest Mosaics Initiative brings together companies, civil society organizations and research institutions, in order to establish a collaborative and innovative model of production, conservation and income generation.
The sustainable forest mosaics concept recognizes the multiple roles tropical forests serve around the world. The forests are viewed as a "puzzle of different land uses, working at a landscape scale to plan productive activities while protecting the forest ecosystems and the services they provide, increasing the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation efforts that combine remaining native and planted forests.
As a key priority, was developed a common protocol to classify the landscape areas, to monitor biodiversity and the forest restoration actions.
GIS tools were used to assist in this effort, to define the places where the monitoring stations must be chosen and to set a timeline for areas prioritizing restoration at the regions where the companies operate.
