Abstract
3D GIS for greater and improved understanding and communication

3D and its direct linkage to GIS is very important. 3DGIS data integration provides overlay and GIS functionality in 3D. By doing so it opens up new opportunities for greater understanding and communication for asset management, transport and planning applications. It aids the design, planning and management of intelligent cities. 3DGIS enhances the assessment and response to environmental hazards whether they are chemical, physical, mechanical or biological. In all of those scenarios 3DGIS becomes a decision support system.
We live in a 3D world and no-one needs to teach us how to interpret it. There is no need to observe the data in its 2D abstraction when it is naturally in 3D.
3DGIS is dynamic, intelligent and time-aware. It makes it easier for the data users and takes it away of the domain of GIS or CAD gurus, therefore making it more streamline and more available.
