Abstract
Zambians picking up our GIS experience!
Track: Education and Training
Authors: Eva Jirner Lindström
Zambia is a thriving mining nation with the goal to become a middle-income nation within the next few decades. However, growth in Zambia is limited due to, for example, lack of infrastructure. Knowledge of GIS is important in order to reach this goal but unfortunately this knowledge is fairly poor in the country.
During September 2011, the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU) provided a course in GIS for a class of geology students from the University of Zambia.
Since digital information was sparse, the team from SGU made use of a couple of Getting to know ArcGIS-books and some maps. After seven days of training all the students could rectify, edit and produce maps in ArcGIS. The training has received a good response from both students and teachers and the plan is to go back again for more advanced training.
