Abstract
ArcGIS and Cartographic Production in a National Mapping Agency
Track: National Mapping
Authors: John Dancy
Six years ago Ordnance Survey introduced ArcGIS into its cartographic production environment by transferring the editing process for 1:250k data from aging, unsupported software and hardware. ArcGIS is now an integral part of the end to end production process for a range of core products. This presentation identifies how specific parts of ArcGIS functionality have assisted this process and includes migration to a single data source for products at different scales; the cartographic styling and representation facilities that have allowed successful pdf generation and enabled outsourcing of the business's printing facility; the Production Manager functionality that controls editing processes for multi-tiled data; geoprocessing capability that makes raster to vector data conversion and data quality improvement more successful, as well as how v10 has made the editing environment more efficient and how future development opportunities will enhance the all round performance of ArcGIS in our map data production process
