Track: Census and Statistical Data

The Geographic Information Science and Technology (GIST) Group at Oak Ridge National Laboratory has long been a leader in population distribution and dynamics research. Current efforts are ongoing to capture detailed local-area demographic information throughout the world in order to support both approaches to modeling and characterizing population. The objective of this study was to look at urban and rural settlements in Yemen, capturing demographic information, spatial settlement and structural characteristics by looking at the differences between linear settlements and nucleated settlements. These spatial characteristics were then used to determine a correlation between population services available in the different spatial settlement types. Utilizing tools in the Modeling Spatial Relationships toolset to verify relationships and to measure the strength of those relationships, patterns between public services and spatial settlement characteristics emerged. These patterns could be utilized for population distribution, public service expansions, and disaster management assessments.
