Abstract
NJDEP Using GIS to Improve Efficiency and Make Better Decisions
Track: Environmental Management
Authors: John Bocchino, Seth Hackman
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) is committed to support and improve environmental management decisions by utilizing the full potential of GIS throughout the Department. From protecting the ecological health of Barnegat Bay to generating the most accurate National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) in the nation, this presentation will show how the NJDEP relies heavily on GIS to provide sound environmental solutions using state of the art GIS technology and spatial data. Regarding technology, integrating various environmental databases with easy-to-use internet mapping applications is just one way the NJDEP utilizes the power of GIS. Regarding spatial data, the NJDEP recognizes that quality data is a critical component of any GIS. The presentation will also cover adherence to updated data and metadata standards which have recently been introduced to improve efficiency and data sharing, as well as implementing data creation procedures in an enterprise SDE like versioning and replication.
