Abstract
Creating a Floor Plan GIS
Track: Facilities
Authors: Eric Darst
GIS has long been devoted to mapping and analysis applications in the world outside. Yet as a society most of us spend much more time working, living and socializing in the spaces inside of buildings— 90% of our time, according to the EPA.
For the University of Washington, the greatest assets lie within the building envelopes— our students, faculty, and staff. Our space has value— intellectual, cultural, and monetary. Tracking space allows us to know how this valuable asset is being used and how to plan accordingly.
Because of the value of space, the University of Washington has prioritized the mapping of the interiors of its buildings. We have implemented data and processes that allow us to map our building floor plans in a GIS. We will share the key points of how we created the system that tracks over twenty million square feet of floor space at the UW.
