Abstract
Innovations in Travel Behavior Research: An ESRI/GPS Partnership
Track: Mobile GIS
Authors: Timothy Michalowski, Dara Seidl
Abt SRBI continues pioneering an innovative use of ESRI products with GPS devices for travel survey research by conducting one of the largest GPS travel surveys. This new project in the Los Angeles, CA region (Southern California Association of Governments) is tracking travel activity of over ten thousand participants. Survey participants carry small mobile GPS devices to record all travel activity over multiple days. This project will result in over two hundred million GPS waypoints. This innovative partnership of ESRI products with GPS offers transportation surveys without traditional paper based approaches. ArcGIS 10 Desktop/Server 10 will be demonstrated for advanced GPS data processing. Customized Python scripts in ArcGIS Modelbuilder allow for automated GIS geocoding, data processing, and spatial analysis. Web-based GIS applications share travel information for organized reporting to a broader client audience and promote informed decision making. ESRI GIS products add great value to this mobile GPS project.
