The widespread use of GIS for tracking water and sanitation assets has improved mapping accuracy and functionality. The Eagle River Water & Sanitation District is a local government that provides water and sewer service to roughly 10,000 customers across approximately 54,000 acres of varied, mountainous terrain. After a years-long process, ERWSD launched its modernized work order system in 2011, upgrading to the GIS-centric Cityworks CMMS. This article details the upgrade process from a manually maintained, AutoCAD-based paper maps system to CMMS. The project involved revising ~200 paper map pages, converting AutoCAD data into a usable format for migration to GIS, undertaking a large-scale GPS project, and GIS data cleanup. The upgrade gained company-wide support, minimizing errors, and maximizing use of resources. Continued system maintenance and future objectives will also be addressed.
