Abstract
The Evolution of Mobile Data Collection – An Assessor's Perspective
Track: Mobile GIS
Authors: Eric Avant
Paper maps, hand-written notes, and manual data entry – this is a common, outdated solution to many local governments' task to assess property values and levy taxes. In a large county with limited certified appraisers staffed, a county-wide reassessment can take nearly a year. To streamline this process, the Colleton County's IT/GIS Department partnered with the Assessor to develop a solution using mobile technology. This presentation will provide 1) an overview of how we integrated CAMA records with our GIS database; 2) deployed this information so that it is accessible using tablet devices; and 3) provided a means for digital data collection that can be imported into appropriate databases. Using existing technology we transform the 'old –school' assessment model to a point and click solution that allows more data to be collected and processed in a manner that is more efficient and cost-effective.
