Abstract
Use of 3D-GIS to assess flood risk behind Hurricane Barriers
Track: 3D

Hurricane Barriers are typically built along coastlines as a means to provide protection from significant storm surges. As such, these barriers have become a vital part of our defense against the Atlantic hurricanes that typically impact New England during the late summer months. Following a series of historic storms that hit this area and caused significant damage, USACE built several hurricane barriers to mitigate future damage. The authors will explore and discuss the development of a methodology and set of procedures to leverage 3D GIS technology to effectively navigate the modeling and mapping challenges introduced by hurricane barriers on coastal flood studies. The authors will present the benefits of implementing their approach and how it can be applied to coastal studies elsewhere.
