3D World in GIS

When we heard the word '3D', we often think about some isolated 3D images. Yes, there are lots of 3D applications out there. They look amazing and are very good for presentations. But they don't usually have the practical meaning for data analysis. However by implementing ArcMap, ArcScene and ArcGlobe, we can turn a simple isolated 3D model into a combined 2D and 3D geodatabase based on which, you can perform a range of spatial data analysis. If it's a building, you can find out the status of that building: capacity, number of floors and emergency exit locations. If it's a fire hydrant, you can find out its street location and fire response zone. If it's a highway bridge, you can find out its type, surface rating and structure. This ability of performing data analysis is extremely important for disaster and emergency situation besides daily management and future planning.
