Abstract
Streamlining Impervious Surface Studies with ESRI Model Builder
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Authors: Michael Saunders
Arlington County, VA's GIS Mapping Center saw a need to measure impervious surfaces within exact drainage basins to determine stormwater discharge to aid engineers with infrastructure development. Utilizing ESRI Model Builder, this project was able to gather various impervious surfaces within selected drainage boundaries and quickly conduct complex analysis yielding impervious and non-impervious area and percentage statistics. Development of a custom model served to automate time consuming and repetitive tasks to derive a complete impervious surface study in minutes. The resulting analysis yielded an accurate model for the engineering department while reducing processing time.
