The 21st century battlespace is highly dynamic and characterized by asymmetric threats. To meet these challenges, logistics operations must be as flexible and efficient as the combat forces they support. In 2013, the Army will field a Petroleum and Water Trace Locator (PAWTL) to help warfighters plan and implement fuel and water pipeline/hoseline systems. In addition to solving system hydraulics, PAWTL supports rapid trace planning, re-planning and implementation by automatically specifying component (e.g., pumps, valves, etc.) coordinates. Traces can be specified by map point-and-click or routed along the local road network. 2D and 3D map views provide situational awareness. Supporting geospatial analyses include multi-factor terrain suitability, and insurgent attack risk. PAWTL reduces planning cycles by an order of magnitude, and could be extended to the layout of storage and issue sites as well as operations planning for additional logistic commodities.
