Pursuant to section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act USGS has identified impaired water bodies, including identification of the impairing pollutant and probable sources.
In California, management of these water bodies is overseen by the Water Resources Board and Regional Water Quality Control Boards. Local government is responsible for regulation of local facilities.
Businesses and farms were identified as potential sourcess. Analysis was conducted for nine pollutant categories. A source within a 200 foot buffer of an impaired water body or its tributary was classified as "Tier 1. A source outside the buffer but within the watershed of the water body was classified as "Tier 2.
Arcmap was used in analyzing water bodies, buffering, tracing tributaries, outlining watersheds, and compiling facilityTier lists.
Tier lists will be used to plan an inspection program to abate impairements. Viewing and query capability will be provided to Watershed Protection Program staff via Geocortex.
