Over 600 discrete drainage area interpretations and 10,000 or more unconnected large scale hydrographic features have complicated the establishment of a sustainable geospatial management framework between Canada and the U.S. Since 2006, the International Joint Commission of Canada and the U.S. in collaboration with major geospatial data stewards have harmonized the fundamental hydrographic footprint along the Canadian – U.S. interface. This highly successful and unprecedented collaboration has produced a suite of seamless large-scale hydrographic datasets as well as highlighted the need for the development of a bi national data stewardship structure.
