Waste Disposal site for City of Colombo Using GIS Techniques

This research explores to identify a site for solid waste disposal for the city of Colombo using GIS techniques. The planners and managers of the city of Colombo experience hardships to find a site for disposal. The application of GIS in Sri Lanka is limited to the extent of map making where is has tremendous power to support decision makers to solve spatial problems. In this research, using GIS technique site identification process has been undertaken for waste disposal in the city of Colombo.
Weighted Overlay techniques in Spatial Analysis functionality in ArcGIS 9.3 was used to combine the data sets.
Suitable sites were identified in the Kirulapone, Kirula and Dematagoda wards. The potential functionality of GIS to solve a spatial problem has been demonstrated. So these potentials can be harnessed to support the decision making tasks and urban management in the Sri Lanka.
