GIS from Scratch in Iberia Parish Government

This presentation will outline the steps taken by Iberia Parish Government to establish a GIS department with the intention of creating an enterprise GIS in the future. Iberia Parish Government secured grant funding for equipment and GIS Manager salary for three years, beginning in late 2009. Governance mechanisms and funding sources were established; server hardware, software, and peripherals were purchased and installed. Some immediate GIS applications were: E-911 addressing, disaster recovery funding, permits, planning & zoning, mosquito control, and public works. GIS products were used in grant applications, taxing district design and analysis, and zoning. GIS planning became central to disaster mitigation and planning, especially for hurricane events in this coastal area.
