Abstract
Leveraging GIS Technology for Stormwater Management
Track: Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater
Authors: Marikka Williams
With increasing urbanization and climate change, stormwater management is an essential component of municipal operations, in the 21st century. Requirements to demonstrate compliance to legislation and the necessity for municipalities to provide stormwater management services with limited funding require innovative solutions. As an integrative mapping tool, that can consume hydraulic and hydrologic information, GIS can model flood impacts in relation to urban environments or proposed development for future planning. As an analytical tool GIS can identify inter-relationships on the landscape to visualize flood mitigation and stormwater treatment strategies. As an asset management tool GIS can track assets to facilitate maintenance in cost effective ways. As an interactive web-mapping tool GIS can maintain communication between departments or with the community. This presentation provides an overview of ways that GIS technology has been utilized to serve as a support system for stormwater management in Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada.
