Abstract
Mapping the Mountain State: A Statewide Basemap Example Using ArcGIS
Track: Mapping and Visualization
Authors: Frank LaFone
Although great strides have been made in commercially available interactive basemaps in recent years, states still have an important role to play. By their nature, basemaps are only as good as the data upon which they are built. Dynamic, data rich basemaps cannot be built and maintained without abundant local data. States and their localities hold the keys to rich basemaps and can direct them toward the data and information of most importance to those in the state. The explosion of interactive and collaborative technologies such as ESRI's ArcGIS Server allows states to integrate data published by the stewards of critical map layers. Feature rich development environments allow states to create custom tools, data, queries and analyses directly applicable and most important to local customers. This presentation will elucidate West Virginia's achievements in creating a rich interactive basemap for the Mountain State.
