Abstract
Using GIS to Measure Modern Development at Teotihuacan, Mexico.
Track: Archaeology
Authors: William Dietze
Archeologists working on the pre-Hispanic city of Teotihuacan, Mexico had noted increasing development in the towns surrounding the site, and census figures confirmed a 17% increase in regional population between 2000 and 2010. Using current and historical aerial photographs, GIS was used to calculate the growth of urban development, and compared the impact of developed areas to the ancient city as determined by the Teotihuacan Mapping Project as well as the protective zones designated by the Government of Mexico. The geospatial results provide a clear and measurable picture of the archaeological site impacted by surrounding development as well as those areas outside governmental protection and under immediate threat.
