Abstract
Populating NWIS with Information Extracted from USGS Map Services
Track: Water Resources
Authors: Steven Predmore, Scott Whitaker
The Management and Population of Sites (MAPS) application is a collaborative effort between the National Water Information System (NWIS), and the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center (NGTOC), both in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The application provides two major functions: a map based graphical user interface for entering sitefile information into NWIS; and a web service, the GeoPoint Query Service (GPQS), to harvest geospatial data from publically available map services to automatically populate NWIS site data. The map based GUI consists of a map form, which is a static display for site locations, and data entry and edit forms for manual entry of data. The GQPS is designed to take the latitude, longitude, and horizontal datum of a point as input and return geospatial information for that point from The National Map and the National Atlas, both from the USGS, and GeoCommunicator from BLM and USFS.
