Track: Public Works

Learn how a Public Works Department in Pierce County, WA accomplished the extraordinary task of building a low cost in house Asset Condition Assessment Scheduling and Managing system using GIS. The design process resulted in a comprehensive, scalable, and adaptable program to encompass all feature types across multiple divisions. In an effort to comply with Federal regulations for the MS4, Pierce County Road Operations accomplished the physical Condition Assessment Rating of 19,500 catch basins in 7 weeks. This was accomplished by a group of Engineering Technicians, field staff and support from upper level Public Works Management. The assessments resulted in generating over 8,000 work orders. The process required use of Enterprise GIS data, Geodatabases, laptop computers, GPS pucks, and knowledge to build inspection forms in ArcPad Studio to accomplish the drainage assessment process. An additional 8,000 work orders were generated collectively from Roadside ROW Structures and Sidewalk assessments as well.
