Abstract
Smart Phone Flood Hazard Mapping - Leveraging GIS Mashups
Track: Disaster and Emergency Management
Authors: Joshua Price
Floods are the most devastating natural disaster in the United States and often advance upon an unaware public even though many flood plains are readily available as GIS data. Smart phones have the capability to place actionable risk mitigation information in the user's hands when and where it matters most. FloodMap Mobile operates on Apple, Android, and Windows Phone smart phones. It mashes data from FEMA, NOAA, USGS, USACE, and Zillow® to provide on-demand, context-sensitive flood risk information in a simple interface for public users and professionals. Case studies for varying user perspectives will be presented with GIS design guidelines for the audience to begin thinking of their own community-based disaster mitigation applications.
