Track: Implementing Enterprise GIS
Authors: Abdiel Quezada
The City of El Paso's Enterprise GIS was due for a critical upgrade. The project involved the collaboration and coordination of several Information Technology (IT) departments. A kick-off meeting with the City and County of El Paso IT departments provided all the necessary information to analyze current and future needs to accommodate resource-intense GIS applications for the Development Services Department. We were able to create strategies to continue the level of service, prepare virtual resources for upgraded GIS, QA/QC, transfer map services, overall system testing, and manage communication with project members outside the GIS group. The end result was a virtualized Enterprise GIS that acts as the backbone for the City's map-centric applications. The new GIS foundation provides the building blocks for new GIS projects in Public Safety. The GIS group also has a streamlined process for future releases of ArcGIS and a better understanding of system through cross training.
