Abstract
Toward Implementing Data Standards in a Diverse Organization
Track: Spatial Data Infrastructure
Authors: Julie Mikolajczyk, Wolfgang Grunberg
The Arizona Game and Fish Department, with more than 600 employees spread across the state, relies on ArcGIS and spatial data to make better decisions to manage Arizona's wildlife populations. The Department shares more than 30 ArcGIS licenses, and two problems have become more prominent lately: the limitations of our network infrastructure for using a centralized dataset and license server, and the 'silos' of data that are natural due to this network connectivity issue. To better streamline the organization, discovery, and sharing of geospatial data, a guiding standards document outlining the best way to collect, store, and document such data across the many disciplines represented within the Department was created. GIS staff also explored the GeoPortal and ArcGIS Online for Organizations to assess how these products might benefit the Department. This presentation will describe the types of standards created, overview the rollout implementation of the standards, and share lessons learned.
