Abstract
Using ArcGIS 10 to Implement Renewable Energy for Naval Facilities
Track: Renewable Energy
Authors: David Poynter, Jeff Carnes
The Department of the Navy (DON) has set aggressive goals for the implementation of renewable and alternative energy solutions. A key goal of DON energy policy is that 50% of shore-based energy requirements will come from alternative energy sources and that 50% of DON installations will be net-zero by 2020. This paper describes the role of GIS in providing critical analysis, the persistence of data derived from this analysis and the effective deployment of data using the ArcGIS Server based GeoReadiness Explorer (GRX). Leveraging powerful out-of-the-box capabilities in ArcGIS 10, analysis was performed to evaluate the solar, wind and geothermal potential for Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Midwest facilities and major installations in 16 states. The analysis, costs and return-on-investment information was stored and deployed, NAVFAC wide, using the NAVFAC GeoReadiness Explorer leveraging the latest ArcGIS Server technology.
