Abstract
Embedding GIS into travel books: The London Olympic Survival Guide
Track: Business and Commercial

Buying a travel book before going on vacation is a typical activity when planning a trip. With the advent of eBook readers, smartphones and tablets, it's now commonplace to buy our travel books in electronic form. Most travel books include maps, but, even in the electronic versions, the maps are simply static images, and don't take advantage of the GPS capabilities of mobile devices.
But what if an eBook reader existed that featured GIS as an integral capability of the book? What new possibilities could be opened up? The book becomes a much more active aid to trip planning, including helping you find a hotel. For GPS-enabled devices, the book can determine its location, and help find nearby places to go and things to do.
The authors describe and demonstrate a new generation of eBook reader that leverages the power of ArcGIS Server to deliver a unique travel planning experience.
