Abstract
Customizing ArcPad for GPS data collection on military training areas
Track: Defense and Intelligence
Authors: Andreas Bauer
The US Army Europe Sustainable Range Program (SRP) is responsible for developing and maintaining geo-spatial data on US and host nation owned training areas across Europe. A large amount of the field data collection at Grafenwoehr training area is carried out by Training Area Coordinators, who are non-GIS users.
The USAREUR SRP GIS team are required to comply with Department of the Army standards for geospatial data. In order for field data to be easily and efficiently incorporated in the GIS databases, the field teams must also comply with these standards.
USAREUR SRP have created a custom ESRI ArcPad 10 application to simplify the process of collecting standardized data in the field. Additionally, the application provides an easy to use interface for users who do not require all of the functions of ArcPad. This presentation describes the customization and presents results of end user experience training and testing.
