The key technologies that are needed to support Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) are Wireless Communications, Positioning, and Mapping. This paper will focas on Mapping technologies and describe how ITS applications will utilize Mapping technologies and what the requisite performance characteristics are for Mapping solutions. This paper will also outline the various Mapping technologies that can be utilized for Map creation and show how the technologies align the needes of the ITS applications. Further, the paper will describe the challenges of deploying and maintaining the Geospital information System to support the ITS applications and the connected vehicle environment. This assessment is fundamental to providing solutions that allow connected vehicle network applications to achieve the connected vehicle vision and bring about transformational improvements in the safety, mobility, and environmental performance of our nation's transportation system.
