Abstract
GIS Weather Analysis and Exposure for Situation Awareness
Track: Atmosphere, Climate, and Weather
Authors: Weather Decision
Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. (WDT) routinely uses geospatial technology for a variety of meteorological purposes including but not limited to historical weather assessments, real-time monitoring of severe and hazardous weather. Naturally, weather data are well suited for GIS applications and geospatial analysis. WDT uses ArgGIS desktop simple yet powerful spatial join and map algebra tools and WDT's unique analysis techniques including objective analysis methods to interpolate irregularly spaced data to a uniform grid. These tools are used to generate analyses of heavy rainfall, hailfall and severe weather climatologies. Ultimately, the resulting analyses can provide critical insight to risk assessment and situation awareness which can save lives and protect property. Illustrations will be provided to demonstrate the analysis techniques and work flows, and show how the resulting analyses can be exposed through various geospatial technologies including ArcGIS desktop, ArcGIS Server and mobile applications.
