Abstract
New Geodesy GIS Tools at NOAA's National Geodetic Survey
Track: Surveying
Authors: Michael Dennis
The mission of NOAA's National Geodetic Survey (NGS) is to define, maintain, and provide access to the National Spatial Reference System, the foundation for navigation, mapping, and surveying in the U.S. For most of its over 200 year history, NGS met its mission objectives without GIS...until now. NGS recently developed GIS tools in Esri ArcToolbox for GPS, leveling, and grid conversion. The GPS and leveling tools create attribute-rich GIS features from NGS software output for GPS processing, survey network adjustment, and geodetic leveling. The grid conversion tool creates Esri rasters from NGS grids, such as geoid models. In addition to this toolbox, NGS created a tool for 3D coordinate transformation between the HARN, NSRS2007, and 2011 realizations of NAD 83. This presentation describes the new tools and shows how to use them for display and analysis of geodetic data, both on desktops or through the Web-based NGS Geodetic Toolkit.
