Abstract
Eliminating Data Silos Using GIS
Track: GIS Concepts and Fundamentals
Authors: Jeffrey Brill
Many organizations experience the problem of data silos. Data is often best handled by subject matter experts (SME) depending on the nature of the information. Issues arise when only the SME's are able to access, decipher, and distribute the data. In general, sharing data is not their primary role and they are often ill-equipped to handle a smooth dissemination of information to interested parties. The result is data silos that can be difficult to overcome. GIS is the natural aggregating system of a wide amount of information. Map based data is intuitive and shareable with a large audience of various skill levels across the organization. GIS can help break down data silos in your organization, allowing better access to information and more informed decision making.
