Abstract
An Integrated GIS Data Management System for NIH
Track: Facilities

The mission of the NIH Division of Environmental Protection (DEP) is to protect and enhance the facilities, air, land and water features across all six NIH campuses. To support that mission and harness the rich GIS data developed by NIH over several years, DEP embarked on a project to build the Integrated Environmental Data Management System (IEDMS) based on ArcGIS 10 and other commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software. From its conception, IEDMS was designed to provide a shared GIS resource for other NIH organizations within the Office of Research Facilities (ORF) and support Office of Research Services (ORS) missions such as campus security. In just 9 months, IEDMS has become that shared ORF/ORS resource and provided DEP staff with robust spatial tools for faster, coordinated spill response; improved campus forest management; centralized facility and landscape spatial data management, enhanced transparency; historical analysis of data and incidents; easy reporting and data mining.
