CCWS successfully performed a large scale upgrade of their asset management system in 2011-2012. A large component of the upgrade was an integration to ArcGIS SDE and Server. In a unified system of this kind, GIS maps provide a centralized dashboard for water system maintenance work while the integrated EAM system provides a repository of data.
There are several ways of performing the integration. One approach is configuring the data elements to be duplicated on both systems allowing for a synchronization of data. Manual communications and data entry, while outdated, are methods still used to accomplish ArcGIS integrations. Cobb County as adopted a federated approach to the integration. This integration allows each system to leverage the functionality of the external systems without duplication or syncing of data.
This presentation focuses on the pros and cons of each integration type and the paradigm changes involved with opening GIS to other systems.
