The City of Fort Collins Forestry division of Parks received grant money for the fiscal year 2012 to conduct an inventory of trees the City of Fort Collins manages. The Forestry Division's to-date inventory is partly maintained in spread sheets and paper maps. The grant money offered the opportunity to conduct a geospatial/geographic inventory of trees managed by their department. However because the entire grant budget was to be utilized to purchase data collection equipment they turned to GIS services to help with the other critical half of the equation, database design, workflow and hardware/software configuration. The tree inventory now gives the Forestry Division the ability easily map tree species distribution, private vs. public property disputes, insect and pathogen spread and location.
