Abstract
Supporting Indigenous Maori GIS Project Management Success in New Zealand
Track: Conservation
Authors: Duane Wilkins, PMP, Roland Pomana
This is a federal government programme to train New Zealand indigenous people in Managing GIS Projects. The programme keeps costs to a minimum through sponsorship from industry partners, and uses training materials sourced from Esri's Websites.
Workshops are undertaken at traditional Maori gathering places (Marae), where attendees are more comfortable and enables participants access from remote locations, incorporating local customs, with great support from tribal authorities.
The Workshops identify the users of Esri ArcGIS Technologies combined with a project management framework specifically designed for Non-Governmental Organisations.
The Programme has gathered significant interest and has now been incorporated into a nationwide indigenous cadetship scheme designed to ensure that Indigenous Maori have the capacity to manage their own conservation lands. The scheme was recently featured with Jack Dangermond on NZ Television.
The Programme is supported by the Esri Distributor, the Maori GIS Association, and provided by The New Zealand Department of Conservation
