Abstract
GIS in a mobile world - supporting our users
Track: Mobile GIS
Authors: Marcus Bodig
Like many other businesses, the City of Fort Collins has seen an increase in mobile devices accessing our website. We expect that within 2 years, these devices will account for 50% of the traffic to our site. One mobile solution we implemented was to use the ESRI app. A bigger challenge was to change our website so that it was accessible regardless of the device being used. A new website was implemented that was built using two different technologies; Silverlight and HTML5. The core of this solution is the ArcGIS server product and its Silverlight and JavaScript API's. By purchasing a third party ArcGIS Server add-on, we were able to quickly take advantage of newer HTML5 technology. With a little custom coding the City's website is now able to detect the kind of device being used and direct them to the appropriate solution thus making our websites mobile friendly.
