Abstract
Right-Sizing and Fine-Tuning your GIS Investment for Disaster Management Applications
Track: Disaster and Emergency Management
Authors: Nate Smith
This session will focus on the techniques to enhance the reliability and capability of GIS units and to better align their products with the needs of their organizations. We will discuss the ways to determine the right size and structure of geospatial capacity for your organization and share some successful practices toward meeting these needs. We will discuss key aspects of professionalism that often undermine effectiveness of smaller GIS units and explore systematic means of assessing these shortcomings and overcoming them. We will specifically consider the needs of the disaster response community as their need for rapid production, high reliability and clarity of content provide added emphasis to these issues. This session is aimed at leaders who may not be GIS experts, but may manage GIS teams, or GIS Unit Leaders who are seeking strategies and approaches to enhance the performance of their team.
