This presentation will discuss cloud computing and mobile applications for Traffic Sign Management in compliance with the FHWA Minimum Retroreflectivity Levels. The applications for sign life cycle require an accurately located GIS inventory and management system that not only tracks the assets but also allow for ease of update and edits. The system vertically integrated sign maintenance and management activities that make it sustainable for daily routine activities as well as compliant to the Minimum Retroreflectivity Levels Ruling. The sign life cycle management approach uses a performance based method for managing signs based visibility and legibility by deploying GIS tools in the field. The results show that this approach selectively identifies the underperforming signs for replacement consideration; only maintenance of the exceptions is required. The statistics of the different types of sign life failures is indicative for the need of continued routine maintenance process rather than periodic or intermittent checks.
