VDOT's Roadway Network System (RNS) Program provides the means of tracking and managing Virginia's road inventory and associated assets and attributes in a tabular, linear, and geospatial context. As part of the RNS Program, VDOT has implemented a Roadway Inventory Management System with a Thin Client and Thick Client application, joined together by a robust Linear Referencing System. The Thick Client application established the tools, processes, and business rules to utilize common road centerlines for all roads in the Commonwealth. The Thin Client application provides tools for querying, editing and reporting on millions of records of roadway inventory business data. The LRS is a dynamic process for referencing business data onto the spatial data. Together, these tools provide the foundation for VDOT's annual multi-billion dollar investment to build, maintain, and operate Virginia's surface transportation system.
