Abstract
An Indigenous ArcGIS Training Program
Track: Tribal/Indigenous GIS Programs
Authors: Roland Pomana, Rangikauhoe Heke
Where are the future Indigenous GIS Analysts/Technicians/Specialists or even digi-slaves?
This presentation will give an insight into the highs and lows of creating and delivering an Indigenous ArcGIS Training Program.
The program uses resources available from ESRI's Virtual Campus and seeks to mentor, develop and encourage attendees to take ownership and manage their own training in the future.
The program has gathered interest and is currently being assessed to be included into a national indigenous conservation cadetship.
A key focus of the program is about Indigenous cultures greatest asset, people.
Throughout the presentation I'll address the following questions.
Is Indigenous ArcGIS Training any different?
How does an organisation take the step from doing things to teaching things?
How many ArcGIS trainees does it take to change a light bulb?
And, of course I will try to entertain you along the way.
