Abstract
An Adaptable Web Mapping Application for Natural Resources Management
Track: Parks, Natural Reserves, Fisheries, and Wildlife Management
Authors: Dean Chiang
Conservation and management of natural resources and habitat is a major part of the mission of the California Department of Fish and Game. Our latest ArcGIS Server-based web applications and services serve an important role for meeting that mission.
We will present a number of DFG map viewers, each tailored for specific department programs, but all based on one underlying web mapping application and a number of reusable services. The discussion will include how each focused map viewer and their services and APIs are giving the public open and easy access to a rich library of natural resource data, regulations, and department activities. We'll also cover how we have developed a robust, adaptable GIS viewer platform based on careful GIS database and service design that has resulted in an application that can be quickly configured and deployed to target different projects and goals.
