ArcGIS Online plays an important role in delivering an organization's information to the public. It provides the final link in a chain of geospatial technology: simple maps.
Consumer mapping, simple web applications have changed the way everyone thinks about using digital maps. The typical consumer map, with simple zoom, pan, search, and routing; is a common tool in today's household, business, and classroom.
ArcGIS Online provides a quick and relatively simple way to build a consumer-grade map application that is able to access, display, and deliver an organization's information to the public, in a form with which they are very familiar. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has taken advantage of this to leverage its substantial investment in GIS technology. Example maps and applications are described, including demonstrations of the workflows used to develop the application, maintain data currency, and special customizations used to enhance the user experience.
